Check Your Blog or Website Status With Are My Sites Up

By Karl L. Gechlik2009-08-20

upHeadAre your sites up? How do you know? Oh you constantly try to get to them and you are updating them all day long. That’s cool. But what do you do when you are away from your keyboard?  Do you check them on your mobile phone or maybe you have a buddy who helps you out?  You might have looked at services that charge a monthly fee to check your website status and email you if troubles arise. But who wants to pay money for something that you can get for free”¦ Am I right or am I right??

Well AreMySitesUp has a free service that will monitor the status of your websites (up to five of them!) and hit you with an email or text message (SMS) when your sites are unreachable or timing out. This will let you react when you find out. The free service alerts you (what it says is) every 30 minutes but in my tests I saw that I got the emails and text messages MUCH faster than that.  The longest I waited was 17 minutes in my 20 tests.

Let’s take a look at the site and service and see how you can put it to the test. First of all you should navigate on over to AreMySitesUp and sign up.

After you sign up you will get an email to confirm you are who you say you are. Once you click the magic link your account will be validated and you will be ready to add sites to be monitored.

Simply click on the MySites button in the upper left hand side. That will bring you to this screen:

Hit the Add New Site button and populate your sites URL/Display name and you are on your way to monitoring.

Add up to 5 sites and they will all be displayed on a list like this:

This is all VERY straight forward and now let’s take a look at the settings:

You can enable Up/Down notifications and time out errors which can occur while your site is up. You can set your email address as well as your mobile number. And if need be you can change your password at the bottom of the page. If you change your email address you will also change your login username.

Checking your website status is very important if you want to seem professional. Now you do not have to spend money every month to do it. Don’t get me wrong they offer paid services as well ““ with a supposed faster notification time but I can tell you I love my free services!
