How to set up tweet notifications in latest Twitter for iOS, Android

By Jason Cipriani2012-07-10

You can now get push notifications when your favorite Twitter accounts tweet. Here's how to set it up.

Twitter just updated its Android and iOS apps with a long list of new features. We had a good idea of what to expect in the update, thanks to a leak, but now we get to see how it all works.

One of the more interesting features included in the update is the ability to get notified of tweets and retweets from specific Twitter accounts. This is sure to come in handy if you have a favorite celebrity you don't want to miss a tweet from, or are watching a company's feed for an announcement or contest.

  1. To turn on push notifications for an account, you'll need to navigate to the profile screen for that account.

  2. Tap on the settings button.

  3. Select "Turn on notifications."

Going forward, you'll receive a push alert on your iPhone (oddly it's missing from the iPad) or Android device whenever that particular account tweets or retweets something. You can turn off the notifications by following the same instructions above, but selecting "Turn off notifications" instead. You can also view everyone you have turn notifications on for under Settings > Notifications.

What kind of accounts will you follow with this new feature? If you don't use the official Twitter apps, is the latest update enough for you to make the switch?

Update, 2:53 p.m. PT: Updated to clarify the feature is missing in the iPad version.
